Onsite Residential Wastewater Treatment Technologies

The challenge for persons living in isolated dwellings is to establish an effective system for managing water, particularly wastewater. For this purpose, onsite residential wastewater treatment technologies have been developed and must meet specific requirements governing their reliability and conformity to municipal bylaws. The BNQ has therefore developed the CAN/BNQ 3680-600 Canadian national standard based on the methodology of standard NSF 40 for onsite residential wastewater treatment technologies. Similar to standard NSF 40, the CAN/BNQ 3680-600 standard includes a six-month period with limitations and frequent sampling; this period is followed by an additional six months of less frequent sampling to verify the reliability of the treatment system during the four seasons of the Québec climate.

Standard CAN/BNQ 3680-600 establishes the performance requirements applicable to onsite residential wastewater treatment technologies used to treat wastewater from isolated dwellings and specifies the test methods used to verify their performance conformity against the requirements established by regulatory authorities.

It applies to onsite residential wastewater treatment technologies used to treat wastewater from isolated dwellings. It does not establish performance requirements for onsite wastewater treatment technologies designed for water reuse, nor those used for other buildings that may be attached to isolated dwellings (service stations or restaurants).

Certification Offer

Marque de certificationManufacturers of onsite residential wastewater treatment technologies have everything to gain by having their products certified since certification is the consumer’s guarantee of quality and reliability. A manufacturer may therefore have its treatment technologies certified under the BNQ certification program specifically created for that purpose. The program is based on the CAN/BNQ 3680-600 standard and the BNQ 3680-900 certification protocol, which specifies the steps that manufacturers must follow to show that they conform to the requirements applicable to the products submitted for certification.

This certification program is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada.
